Sugar is not a treat - Jody Stanislaw. - TEDX Sun Valley

Sugar to diabetics is a poison.


Extra sugar to non diabetics is a poison.


This text is taken from Jody Stanislaw who specialises in diabetes. She is an expert because when she a child, just seven years old, she was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes. The effects of sugar has been a lifelong study for her.


Take a few moments to think about your most vital organs, these organs that you cannot live without.

You probably thought about heart, brain, lungs, but did you think about your PANCREAS?


Jody Stanislaw, a Naturopathic Doctor loves educating people about the importance of the Pancreas, which is located on the left side under the lower ribs and behind the the stomach.

Inside your pancreas is a small cluster of cells called BETA CELLS. You only have two grams actually, the size of two almonds.

These life-giving cells surprisingly get no attention. Yet if they were to wither away in absence of medical intervention, you would literally die within a few weeks.

That is how important your BETA CELLS are: you would die. Here is how they work: The beta cells are the security guards for your blood, and as soon as they see this rush of sugar, they send off alarm bells. They call in a team of dump trucks to haul all of that sugar out. The dump trucks are called insulin, and insulin’s job is to pick up all that sugar out of the blood, and feed it to your liver, your muscles or store it as fat, because you do not want all that excess sugar hanging out in your blood.

This seems pretty innocent, right? Here is the problem: millions and millions today are overworking their security force. Over working your Beta cells does not happen only with obvious foods, like cake and ice cream, but it also happens with highly refined carbohydrate foods, like yogurt and granola, cereal, bread, pasta, alcohol even when used in moderation.

Any time you eat these foods, your Beta Cells send the alarm bells off to make more insulin. It is scary because just like anything that gets over used, from cars to computers, the parts eventually wear out, leading to Beta Cell burnout.


This is another name for pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes which you really do not want to suffer from.

Beta Cell burnout can happen to anyone, and it has a lot to do with your food choices. As your Beta Cells weaken through the years, the blood sugar level starts to rise to a dangerous level, maybe even unbeknownst to you.


If the Beta Cells get really weak and you do not pick it up and your diet does not change - you’ll likely need to take insulin injections every day for the rest of your life to stay alive.


The good news, the really good news, is reversing Beta Cell burnout is entirely possible. All you need is a few small dietary tweaks and lifestyle changes, especially when caught early.


Now the cause of type 1 is very different than the pandemic of type 2 today that we are hearing so n much about.

In type 1, the immune system attacked and killed all of her Beta Cells. Killed them - they are gone - when she was just seven.


Why is this is still not understood?


But as a result, without her Beta Cells she takes insulin injections every day and she has taken over 100,000 in her lifetime, thus far.

Living with type 1, in a way, has been a gift, though, because she so motivated not to eat sugar. When she eats sugar her blood sugar level skyrockets and she feels awful; she gets a headache and cranky. If the phone rings she does not answer it, because she is so irritable and she just wants to take a nap.


Most people walk around oblivious to this direct correlation between what you have eaten and how you feel, so the negative effects on all of you living with Beta Cells - you are lucky enough to still have them - is much more subtle, but potentially just as deadly.


The good news is saving your Beta Cell is entirely in your hands.


This essay would not have happened ten years ago when sugar wasn’t added to everything that we eat, and it was just used on special occasions.


Are you aware that there are only ten companies that own the entire world’s food brands?


The reality is the sweeter a food is, the more it sells. So when you eat sugar, you might immediately feel a rush of energy and kind of feel good, think “Wow, sugar makes me feel great!” But the reality is an hour later, if you pay attention, you’ll likely feel zapped.

You might not be able to concentrate: want a nap, or you might want to eat more sugar. If we keep doing this over a lifetime, the Beta Cells get weak, the blood sugar level slowly starts to rise, and over time, high-blood sugar causes heart disease, kidney failure, stokes, gangrene, blindness, Alzheimer’s, lower limb amputation, depression, violent behaviour and more.


The amount of deaths caused by sugar - all of these afflictions combined - leads to more deaths than automobile accidents.

Hard to believe!


SUGAR IS NOT A TREAT.

The rate we are consuming sugar today, sugar has become a gradual death sentence.


But we have this major problem, and know know how to tame it. Do not freak out if you see your child in a state of sugar abuse. They are tired all the time, good in the morning, but then they drag, and cannot focus, and are cranky. Typical signs. Mums ask the doctor to check the thyroid/ Do I have a brain tumour? Is that why I cannot think?

Before you ask the Doctor just look at what you had for breakfast?

Did you have a sweet cereal and a Coke for a drink? And then toast and beans.

You felt well when you got up, had breakfast heavily loaded with sugar that spiked your sugar blood levels then you came down with a crash. No secret here what the problem is, but if this is your norm then you are killing you pancreas.


Lets just start the day with Protein. Eggs for breakfast and maybe sliced apple with peanut butter.

When you start the day with balanced blood sugar level, your energy is going to be a lot better. Two weeks later you think nothings wrong and you are happy now!

Changing you life can be so simple: it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It is so easy to fall into the traps laid by the 1.5 trillion dollar processed-food industry today. They label so many high-sugar foods as healthy: many foods have more sugar, ounce for ounce, than Coca-cola. 

Kids are eating fruit chews today. Kids are you aware they are not fruit? It is sugar and fruit flavouring.


There was a study done in rats that showed chronic sugar consumption creates as much damage to the brain as abuse done in childhood. Drinking soda is madness but they have replaced it with sports drinks and energy drinks. These drinks are shamefully being touted as healthy, yet they are a key part of the obesity epidemic that is spreading today.

And, all of you parents out there and grandparents and loved ones, the six year old birthday cake and ice cream, and they are running around like a bunch of screaming banshees.

This behaviour is the direct result of sugar spike.

This happens in schools every day and the sad thing is we are doing it as adults: pasta and beer, pizza and beer, pasta and bread. It is the same effect!

According to the World Health Organisation, there are over 420 million people today with type 2 diabetes, and that number just keeps going up.

In America alone, if our eating habits do not change in the next few decades, that will be one in three. That means it will be someone you love or it might be you!

We all become so brainwashed to think that sugar on a daily basis is OK.


Frankly, it is reminiscent of when doctors used to endorse smoking. What makes me so angry is that kids with diabetes are told they can eat what they want and just make more insulin to deal with it. 

The blood sugar fluctuations that this way of eating causes to their precious bodies is a medical tragedy!

And it’s devastating because the solution is so simple.


WE NEED TO EAT LESS SUGAR


Even if you love cookies, but we are not talking of never eating sugar again.

There is an 80-20 principle:

Put healthy 80% aside and the highly- processed carb foods - the 20% separate. But today we have it switched the wrong way?

20% healthy and 80% sugar!

Our future depends on a healthy society. More immediately your family depends on healthy eating.

Your contribution is needed in todays crazy world. 

Mum your children are looking up to you to keep them healthy.

Sugar is never going to help motivate you to have a great day.

Would you like to have more energy, more memory, more productivity? Better skin, better sleep, more joy.

Reducing sugar and highly-processed carbohydrate foods from your diet could change your life.

Now maybe you’re resistant, just overwhelmed. I know because sugar is addictive and if you have had it daily all you life it is going to be hard. You have tried it before and failed.

So do not force sugar on your babies as a treat. The treat is going to make them dependant, a sugar junky for the rest of their lives and you did it to them!


Added Sugar is a poison. There is enough sugar in vegetables the satisfy our body needs.

Have no fear, you're covered! Because when you want to make a big change in your life, you have to start with small steps. That is all you need if you love your family and yourself.


Three steps to try over the next day. If you're feeling highly motivated, then try all three.


No. 1:

Have protein for breakfast, eggs, nuts, cottage cheese, sliced apple, with peanut butter. This is a balance energy level.


No. 2: 

After you have had a meal but you want something more. You want a sugary snack. Next time you’re feeling that you just want a sweet:

Grab a glass of water first. Being dehydrated actually can feel like being hungry.

Try a glass of water first.

You will feel more energised because a 5% decrease in hydration can correlate to a 20% decrease in energy. So you will have more energy and do not need the sugar which will only prop you up for a bit and then drop you.


No. 3:

FIND LOW-SUGAR REPLACEMENTS FOR HIGH-CARB FOODS

There are so many wonderful low-carb replacements now for high-carb foods.

Pizza crusts made out of cauliflower, pasta can be made out of Zucchini noodles. You can make chocolate chip cookies out of almond flour and stevia sweetener. There are so many great ones out there.

In conclusion, what I want to leave you with is this: if it is not already obvious, reducing sugar in your diet could be life-changing for you.

You have BETA CELLS: protect them because you will never get them back - insulin for life!

You have the knowledge and you have the power.

Use your meals as they were intended to fuel you into greatness.
